DOKKUM

Dokkum, the northernmost city of the Frisian eleven cities, is located 10 km away from our guest house. This historic city exudes an atmosphere of authenticity and boasts a rich cultural heritage. Stroll through the narrow streets and admire the beautiful old buildings that adorn the historic centre. Discover the lively market squares, cosy cafes, and local shops where you can find unique souvenirs. Dokkum is also known for its stunning canals and bridges that give the city a picturesque appearance. Enjoy the hospitality of the locals and savour the delicious regional dishes in the various restaurants. With its idyllic charm and warm atmosphere, Dokkum is definitely worth a visit. Additionally, Dokkum is the turning point of the legendary Elfstedentocht ice skating race.

LEEUWARDEN

The capital of Friesland. In 2018, it was the European Capital of Culture. It’s approximately a 25 km drive from the guest house and definitely worth a visit.
In 2018, eleven sculptures by international artists took on life-sized forms in the Frisian cities. Eleven cities, eleven fountains, eleven stories. It’s recommended to follow this route and immerse yourself in culture in our beautiful province.

Attractions: the Fries Museum, Fries Verzetsmuseum (Frisian Resistance Museum), Natuurmuseum (Natural History Museum), the Grutterswinkel (Grocery Store), and the Oldehove (this leaning, unfinished Gothic bell tower from the 16th century is accessible to the public).
For children, a visit to AquaZoo is certainly a fantastic outing.
In short, “Ljouwert” (Leeuwarden) is absolutely worth a visit.

MUDFLAT HIKING

Mudflat hiking in the vicinity of Holwerd is a unique and unforgettable experience. The Wadden Sea, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a special blend of natural beauty, adventure, and discovery.

We are pleased to offer an additional special experience to enhance your stay at Oer it fjild. In addition to the beautiful surroundings, you also have the opportunity to enjoy the Dark Sky in the evening. Due to its remote location and minimal light pollution, you can experience the magic of the starry sky here. Be amazed by the bright stars, the sparkling Milky Way, and perhaps even the dance of shooting stars. It’s a unique opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and lose yourself in the endless beauty of the universe. HEGEBEINTUM

The picturesque Frisian village of Hegebeintum is located in the beautiful terp area of Friesland. Here, you will find the highest terp (artificial dwelling mound) in the Netherlands, with an impressive height of 8.80 meters above sea level. Discover the unique attractions accessible to the public, thanks to the efforts of the Terp Hegebeintum Foundation. Explore the Knowledge and Information Center, a modern information center at the base of the terp. Here, you can enjoy the Archaeological Support Point, changing exhibitions, and the cosy Terp Café. The permanent exhibition takes you on a journey through the terp landscape of Fryslân, where you’ll learn about the history of the terps and the excavations that took place in the 19th and 20th centuries. On the terp itself, there is a beautiful 12th-century Romanesque church, where you can admire a unique collection of memorial boards that recall the families who once lived at Harsta State. Harsta State, an ancient monumental mansion, recently underwent a full restoration and is now partially open for viewing.
